House Noctuelle
❝ romantic gothic deals with the tormented condition of a creature suspended between the extremes of faith and skepticism, beatitude and horror, being and nothingness, love and hate — and anguished by an indefinable guilt for some crime it cannot remember having committed. ❞
— G. R. Thompson: from “Romanticism and the Gothic Tradition”
House Noctuelle is a place for those who want a flexible, immersive, and collaborative RP home. We welcome everyone and will do our best to be as inclusive and considerate as possible. Whether you prefer active social RP, slower character-driven storytelling, or simply want a place where your character can exist and interact comfortably, we aim to provide a space where every member has room to contribute, connect, and explore.
Lore
A House of Ghosts
Once recorded in the lesser rolls of Ishgardian citizenry, House Noctuelle has never been counted among the High Houses, nor even among the respected minor families that orbit them. Its name appears only in fragmented registries, often misspelled or struck through, as though the city itself cannot decide whether it exists. The estate lies in the shadowed reaches of the Brume, where stonework blackens from soot and snow alike. Its architecture is unmistakably Ishgardian, arched windows, steep roofs, iron-wrought balconies, but time and neglect have rendered it subtly wrong. The angles feel too sharp. The halls seem longer within than without. Lamps burn low even when freshly lit.House Noctuelle was, by all accounts, an attempt at ascent.Generations ago, a minor merchant family sought legitimacy in the rigid hierarchy of Ishgard. They purchased land, commissioned a modest manor, and adopted the trappings of nobility without ever receiving formal recognition. Their efforts were met not with outrage, but with indifference, a far colder fate. The house was never acknowledged, never elevated, and never entirely dismissed. It simply lingered. In time, rumors replaced records.Servants were said to leave without notice, or not leave at all. Deliveries would be made, yet no one would be seen receiving them. Windows glowed at odd hours. Bells rang in rooms where no chapel stood. Some whispered that the family turned to forbidden means to secure their place, seeking power where the Holy See would never grant it.After the Dragonsong War, when Ishgard began to loosen its iron grip on tradition, House Noctuelle should have vanished entirely.Instead, it became… accessible.
The gates, once sealed, now stand partially open. Travelers, merchants, and the curious may enter under the pretense of business or shelter. The house presents itself as a quiet refuge, somber but accommodating, with attendants who speak little and ask less. It offers warmth, discretion, and the peculiar sense that one is being observed not with hostility, but with intent.Yet the deeper one wanders, the more the house reveals its true nature. There are doors that lead back to themselves. Corridors that do not align with the building’s exterior. Rooms preserved as though awaiting occupants long gone. Beneath it all lies the cellar, if it can be called such. Few who descend can clearly describe its structure. Fewer still agree on what resides there. Some claim the house harbors voidsent, bound not by chains but by quiet accord. Others insist the estate itself is the haunting, that it remembers, that it reshapes, that it feeds on presence rather than flesh. A handful of visitors speak of whispers, not malicious but beckoning, as though the house desires witnesses.Despite this, or perhaps because of it, House Noctuelle endures. It occupies a peculiar space within Ishgard’s social fabric, too insignificant to purge, too unsettling to ignore. Officials dismiss it as rumor or relic. Locals avoid it out of habit rather than fear. And yet, it remains open.Always open. Those who seek it will find it. Those who find it rarely leave unchanged.House Noctuelle does not claim power, nor prestige, nor even legitimacy. It simply exists, and in doing so, invites others to step inside and decide for themselves whether it is sanctuary, curiosity … or something far less merciful.
Hooks
Seeking shelter or a quiet place to recover. Some characters may come to House Noctuelle in need of rest, privacy, or a place away from the eyes of the world. Whether they are escaping hardship, hiding from trouble, or simply searching for a moment of peace, the house can serve as a temporary refuge.
Hired for work, upkeep, research, or assistance. Others may arrive in a more practical capacity, brought in to help maintain the estate, manage its records, assist with guests, or support the house in whatever unusual matters it tends to attract. This gives grounded characters a natural reason to be present without requiring them to be tied to the deeper mysteries right away.
Drawn in by rumors of haunting or supernatural activity. The House has a reputation, and that alone is enough to invite curious minds. They may have heard enough to know it is strange, but not enough to stay away, and that curiosity can become the first step toward deeper involvement with the company.
Interested in voidsent, curses, aether, or occult mysteries. For those with a scholarly, arcane, or reckless bent, the house can be a source of fascination. Its darker secrets may attract characters who study the unnatural, seek forbidden knowledge, or are willing to peer into things others prefer to avoid.
Seeking a place to start over. Some characters may come to House Noctuelle because they have lost status, purpose, or direction and need somewhere that does not immediately define them by their past. The house can be a place where a character begins again, slowly rebuilding themselves in the company of others.
Invited by a member, contact, or patron. A more personal connection can also bring a character through the doors. Perhaps they were introduced by someone already within the house, brought in through a business relationship, or encouraged to visit by a patron who thought the environment might suit them.
A Note for Members
Your character does not need a dramatic or elaborate reason to be here. House Noctuelle is meant to support member-driven RP, which means characters are welcome whether they arrive with a strong existing story or are still finding their place. The important thing is that they have space to connect, grow, and become part of the world around them.

House Noctuelle is a dark, gothic, mature-themed free company built around social roleplay, character growth, and collaborative storytelling at a comfortable pace. Our goal is not to run constant large-scale FC plots or create an environment where members feel pressured to keep up with long-running mandatory arcs. Instead, we want to provide a welcoming space where players can enjoy roleplay in a way that feels natural, whether that means quiet character interaction, personal stories, casual social scenes, or deeper narrative development. We believe that a strong community is built through variety, creativity, and shared opportunity. House Noctuelle is designed to bring together a wide range of characters, perspectives, and playstyles so that members can grow alongside one another without having to put their own OC development on hold. We encourage members to bring their own stories, ideas, and character connections into the company, but we also understand that not everyone will arrive with a story already in progress, and that is perfectly fine. There will always be opportunities for roleplay within the community, whether a member wants to contribute their own narrative or simply enjoy the stories unfolding around them. While the heart of House Noctuelle will always be member-driven RP, we will also have a small number of RP planners and story facilitators who help organize occasional smaller-scale stories and shared moments. These are meant to support the community, not dominate it. In addition to story-heavy plots, we also plan to include casual light gatherings and other low-pressure social opportunities to give everyone room to participate in the ways they enjoy most.

NSFW content is only allowed in its designated Discord space, and it should stay there. That channel exists for content that is a little too spicy for SFW spaces, not for posting explicit material simply for the sake of it or turning the community into a place for nonstop sexual content.In-game, please keep nude mods and overly revealing presentation out of serious RP events and official scenes. We ask that everyone be mindful of the atmosphere others have worked hard to create and present themselves in a way that respects the tone of the moment.
